Information about Kimberley

Kimberley is the capital and largest city of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is located approximately 110 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The city has considerable historical significance due to its diamond mining past and the siege during the Second Boer War. British businessmen Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnato made their fortunes in Kimberley, and the roots of the De Beers company can also be traced to the early days of the mining town.

Kimberley was the first city in the Southern Hemisphere and the second in the world after Philadelphia to integrate electric street lights into its infrastructure on September 2, 1882. The first Stock Exchange in Africa was also built in Kimberley, as early as 1881.Nearby, the Kimberley Mine Museum is a re-creation of the town in its heyday, and displays jewellery and uncut diamonds. The William Humphreys Art Gallery exhibits South African work, Old Master drawings, 17th-century European paintings and modern art.

Northwest of the city centre is the hilltop Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre, with indigenous San rock art. At the McGregor Museum’s (picture left : staircase in musuem entrance hall) main venue, the sanitorium, artefacts and documents trace southern African history, from the origins of mankind to the late-19th-century Anglo-Boer War. A key battle of that war took place on Magersfontein Battlefield, south of the city, where trenches, graves and the Burgher Monument can be toured. The former residence of activist and writer Solomon T. Plaatje houses the Sol Plaatje Museum and Library. The site has displays on Plaatje’s books and political role.
